Hyperpigmentation is darkening of the skin caused by the over production pigment in the skin known as melanin.
Hyperpigmentation is the result of either two occurrences. The first being when there is an abnormally
high concentration of melanocytes produce melanin. The second is when melanocytes are hyperactive.
For instance, sun exposure stimulates the production of melanin. Although it can affect anybody, this condition is more prevalent amongst certain ethnicities such as Asian, Mediterranean, African or Latin. Hyperpigmentation can affect any part of the body including the face, hands and neck.
Common causes of hyperpigmentation include
- Overexposure to the sun
- Picking at the skin
- Hormonal changes
- Certain medication such as antibiotics, hormone treatments and anti-seizure drugs
- Inflammation and skin injuries such as acne
Hyperpigmentation is very difficult to 'cure' however we can lighten the condition by Chemical Peels, IPL and Skincare Products.
