Blackheads and Whiteheads
Blackheads and whiteheads are formed when pores become blocked with the skin’s natural oil – sebum. Sebum usually drains to the surface of the skin but in some cases pores become blocked.
Blackheads are a result of a follicle having a wider than normal opening which then becomes blocked with sloughed off skin cells and sebum. The plug of sebum reacts with the air, resulting in the oxidisation of melanin to give them their black colour.
Whiteheads are formed when the sebum and bacteria are trapped under the surface of the skin.
