An Isometric contraction is a muscular tension without changing the length of the muscle. This kind of contraction is quite difficult to achieve naturally.
Every muscle is made up of bundles of fibres which react to nervous stimulation. In a normal ‘workout’ as movement is required this consumes energy and is basically isotonic activity. When we perform isotonic exercise we alternate between concentric and eccentric movements. This action would normally stimulates about 50% of the muscle fibres.
With isometric exercise the muscles do not contract or relax but stay a fixed length. This is Static or Isometric muscular activity and it stimulates 100% of the muscle fibres. Therefore straight away you can see that isometric exercise is perfect for the muscles as it stimulates 100% of the muscle fibres with no effort. With a 6 second stimulation the perfect tension on the bundles of muscles fibres, restores tone and strength with no effort. As this isometric exercise increases muscle strength, the muscle shortens in length and the tissue around it is lifted.
